💬WhatsApp community
We’ve recently launched our WhatsApp community hub for members, here’s a quick rundown of how it works.
The community is essentially a collection of all your relevant Corsham cycling club WhatsApp groups. When you first join the Corsham cycling club community, you’ll see a default channel called ‘announcements’ and all members should be able to see it. This is where we will put last minute schedule changes and important club communications. The announcements group is transmit only but members should be able to reply to each announcement creating a thread.
There are a few other useful groups where members can also post and reply to messages. However, when you join a new WhatsApp group within the community for the first time, you won’t see each groups previous message history. This is a limitation of WhatsApp groups. For example, if you join a WhatsApp group planning an event and don’t see any previous messages, that’s normal, you can ask members of that group to forward messages or repost anything you had missed. To ensure messages are visible to new members joining the group later, we recommend pinning them. Community admins will also pin important messages for newcomers where possible.
Another community group is the CCC cycling marketplace, a member-to-member platform for selling cycling equipment and kit. We also have the CCC Ride Leads and Emergency WhatsApp group, reserved for ride leads. If you’re interested in becoming a ride leader, reach out to a committee member on one of our rides and they’ll invite you to the group. Various other event groups will appear periodically, catering to people planning to attend. Please don’t join every WhatsApp group; focus on those relevant to your activities.
☀️Mallorca 2027
We’re planning a club trip to Mallorca in October 2027 and looking for a show of interest to firm things up. The trip will be in the first week of October, likely from Saturday 2nd to Saturday 9th.
James Lye has kindly offered to organise the trip for us through Stuart Hall cycling.
Approx £770 per person for the week, half board, based on two sharing a room. We think the single supplement will be around £100, but not confirmed yet.
Includes transfers & guides.
Bike hire is £30/day for mechanical groupset, £40 for Di2, with £25 insurance available for the week.
Flights will be extra. We’ll recommend a flight from Bristol and you’ll need to book your own flights.
Three routes to choose from each day with something to suit riders in our pace groups from Green+ to Red.
Fantastic roads, views and wall to wall sunshine*
*usually!
If you’re interested in joining please email corshamcc@gmail.com with Mallorca 27 in the subject line by the end of October - please let us know which group you usually ride with too.
If the numbers look good then we’ll be back in touch later in the year and would aim to take deposits during January.
😊Saftey, club culture and ethos
Cycling on the road in the UK can at times be hazardous due to the state of the roads, careless driving by some motorists and as we go into the winter potentially poor weather conditions. It is therefore important that when riding in a group potential hazards are communicated to the group by the leading riders. A shout of ‘hole’ can save following riders from hitting a pothole and puncturing or coming off. Especial care should be taken at junctions: shouting ‘slowing or stopping’ when approaching a junction and ‘clear’ when setting off.
Please keep an eye out for each other as we head into the autumn and winter season and help maintain our encouraging, friendly and inclusive club ethos. If you see someone struggling, maybe offer a wheel or let the lead rider know so they can ease up. if you’re leading, keep an eye out for any gap building behind you and if you’re taking the lead aim to respect the pace you inherit. On hills regrouping at the top is the best option. In some circumstances and with the agreement of all concerned the group can split to the benefit of all.
💦Mudguards
As we head into the autumn and winter and the prospect of wet weather, a reminder that mudguards are an essential part of winter riding. Not only do they protect you and your bike but also stop the person behind you from being sprayed from your back wheel. Mudguards that come to halfway down the back wheel will not stop this so we recommend putting an extension onto the back mudguard to take it closer to the ground.
❄️Winter Hills/Winter social ride
With the nights drawing in the last chaingang, weather permitting, will be on Wednesday 30th of September. The following week, Wednesday 7th of October, will see the return of the winter hills route. Riding up and down hills in the dark is not for everyone, but is an excellent way of maintaining strength endurance over the winter. To complement this ride we will be trialling a winter social ride of seventeen miles on the old chain gang route. Good bike lights are essential.
📃AGM
The club AGM will be held on Monday 7th December at the Pound. This year we have decided to present the club awards at the christmas meal and so the AGM will be soley for the required administrative and constitutional matters. As always we are looking for new faces on the committee. If you are interested in helping to run our club please speak to a current committee member about what’s involved.
🎄Christmas meal/awards presentation🎄
The annual club christmas meal will be held on Friday 11th December at the cricket club. There will be a meal, music, dancing and for the first time we will present the club awards. More details on booking and how to vote for the club awards will follow in due course.
